I’m so excited to participate in the “Historical Heartthrobs Blog Tour” organized by Zest Books. As part of the tour I was invited to interview Kelly Murphy, the author of “Historical Heartthrobs: 50 Timeless Crushes – From Cleopatra to Camus”. There are so many activities going on throughout this tour that I decided to dedicate this post to our interview and publish another post containing both my review and an awesome autographed book giveaway. Stay tuned. As soon as we’re finished here, I’ll direct you there.
First, a bit about Kelly. As stated on her Goodreads Author page, Kelly was born and raised among the sprawling cornfields of rural Pennsylvania. Now, she writes from her child-sized apartment in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Her articles have appeared in Brokelyn, Brooklyn Based, Chic Today, NCTE’s The Council Chronicle, and various other publications. She graduated from Penn State with a degree in English and currently works in publishing. She wrote “Historical Heartthrobs” with Hallie Fryd.
Kimberly: What are some of the challenges you encountered when writing HISTORICAL HEARTTHROBS?
Kelly: Selecting the right heartthrobs! I wanted to make sure there was something for everyone in the book, and hunting down historical figures of all different backgrounds and occupations from all different time periods was hard work. I think we ended up with a pretty solid selection, but I’ll let the readers be the judge!
Kimberly: What was the creative spark for HISTORICAL HEARTTHROBS?
Kelly: Injecting that creativity you speak of into history! We were searching for a way to liven up the biographies of these truly fascinating figures whose life stories tend be condensed into dates and bland facts. What better way to illuminate the real essence of these individuals than through their love lives?
Kimberly: If you were to recommend one book, what would it be? Why?
Kelly: Though it’s a bit heavy, I’d say Milan Kundera‘s The Unbearable Lightness of Being. It was big game changer for me in my late teens. I learned a lot about the delicate balance of joy and sadness and what lies in between the two. It’s also a good philosophy primer, if you’re into that sort of thing.
Kimberly: What book was your “first love”?
Kelly: Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time. It gave me hope as a misfit that something magical might be around the corner for me, too – or even hiding somewhere in my imagination.
Kimberly: Who would have been historical heartthrob #51?
Kelly: We talked a lot about including Barack Obama and eventually decided against it, but he’d be #51 for sure.
Kimberly: What are your current projects?
Kelly: In between big projects, I’m always working on local culture pieces for Brokelyn.com, a blog about living large on small change in Brooklyn, NY. I’m also hoping to plunge into the world of adult literary fiction with the upcoming Twitter Fiction Festival. Wish me luck!
Kimberly: What question do you wish interviewers would ask you?
Kelly: A friend actually asked me awhile back who the most misunderstood heartthrob is. My quick answer was Nikola Tesla, but I think it’s an inquiry that’s definitely worth some thought.
