Five Minute Friday: Friend

“Five Minute Friday” is a weekly event that has been described as a writing flash mob.  Every week Lisa-Jo Baker announces a new writing prompt and all the participants free-write for — yep, you guessed it — five minutes.  No editing.  Just real.  Free.  Raw.  Want to know how it all got started?  Read the back story.  Sound like fun?  Come on over and join us!

This week’s prompt is “Friend“.

Ready.

Set.

Go!

Friend

Girlfriend.  Boyfriend.  Best Friend.  Friend.  They all signify relationships that vary in intensity.  Like a pendulum they swing.  The emotions surrounding these words — these people.

I haven’t had any true ‘friend’ relationships that are only ‘high’ or only ‘low’ in my life but I guess that goes with the territory.  The ones we feel most attached to are the ones whose thoughts and opinions matter the most to us.  When those opinions aren’t eye-to-eye with our own, we can feel like we’re personally rejected.  Constructive criticism is more honest but can also be harder to swallow.  It shouldn’t be this way.  I think.

I thought of Jesus and Peter just now.  Remember when Jesus said, “Get behind me, Satan” — to Peter.  I guess he wouldn’t have taken that very well.  I think if it were me I’d have felt insulted, unappreciated and somewhat miffed.  Fine, I’d think, I thought we were friends.  In hindsight, from here, we can understand.  They were truly friends.

Without an emotional charge between two people – hopefully positive, the relationship is casual and the people are probably not ‘friends’.  So, if you’ve got someone in your life who sticks to you like glue, drives you mad, and loves you unconditionally – deep down inside, then I’d say you have a real friend.  Treasure that relationship.  Always.

STOP.

  1. Hi Kimberly – Hooking up through FMF. Loved reading your thoughts on friendship and the powerful reminder that sometimes speaking truth because one cares can sound uncaring but in the end everyone benefits. Blessings – Heather
